One month prior to your move
- Clean out and be ruthless! Is packing that item, paying to have it moved and unpacking it really worth it? Goodwill comes in very handy here!
- Gather all your hazardous waste. Buncombe County accepts household hazardous waste (HHW) and electronics every Friday between 9am and 3pm at a special drop-off area at the Landfill. For more information, go to www.buncombecounty.org/Living/House/Hazardous/Disposing.asp
- Make a list of everything you're bringing to your new home and find out the replacement value of all belongings, for insurance purposes. MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE INSURED FOR 100% OF LOSS AND NOT A FIXED PRICE PER POUND!
- Fill out a change of address form. Make a list as you notify friends, family and others of your new address.

- Get copies of your medical and dental records, if necessary.
- Get copies of veterinary records, if necessary.
- If you're moving out of North Carolina, go to http://www.dmv.org/relocation to find out about auto licensing and insurance in your new locale.
- If you're moving within North Carolina, go to http://www.dmv.org/nc-north-carolina/change-address.php to find out where and how to change your address on your driver's license.
- If you’re moving to North Carolina for the first time, go to http://www.dmv.org/nc-north-carolina/new-to-north-carolina.php to find out what you’ll need to do in order to obtain a new driver’s license.
- Notify your kids' schools and have their records transferred to their new schools.
- Return any cable equipment.
- Make hotel and airline reservations if you need them.
1 to 2 weeks before your move
- Return any borrowed items.
- Collect all the items you may have loaned out.
- Make arrangements to disconnect gas, electric and other utilities.
- Make arrangements to connect utilities at your new place.
- Arrange to have major appliances prepped for the move.
2 days before your move
- Dispose of all flammables.
- Pack your suitcase for the car or plane.
- Arrange for removal of "installed items" you're bringing with you, like a TV antenna or shelves.
- Pack a box with paper products, toiletries and other essentials that you'll need the first day in your new home. (Make sure to mark this box "Do Not Move").
1 day prior to your move
- Take down draperies and rods, if agreed to in you contract.
- Empty, defrost and clean your refrigerator. Make sure it has at least 24 hours to air dry.
- Clean and air your stove.
- Pack your personal belongings (but leave out your alarm clock!)
Moving Day
- Collect all keys to locking items. Put them on one key-ring so you can get to them easily.
- Make sure you're at home when the movers arrive, so you can sign an inventory.
- Walk around with the crew chief while he does the inventory.
- Make sure everything is packed to your liking for the move.
- Keep your signed bill of lading and inventory in an easily accessible place.
- Make sure the driver has the correct delivery address and phone number. Ask if there are any contract specifications as to your being reimbursed a portion of the moving costs if the movers are late delivering your items.
- Confirm the expected delivery time with the driver.
- Before you leave, do a final walk through of every room.
- Check all closets and cabinets.
