Moving Checklist

One month prior to your move

  • Clean out and be ruthless! Is packing that item, paying to have it moved and unpacking it really worth it? Goodwill comes in very handy here!
  • Gather all your hazardous waste. Buncombe County accepts household hazardous waste (HHW) and electronics every Friday between 9am and 3pm at a special drop-off area at the Landfill. For more information, go to www.buncombecounty.org/Living/House/Hazardous/Disposing.asp
  • Make a list of everything you're bringing to your new home and find out the replacement value of all belongings, for insurance purposes. MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE INSURED FOR 100% OF LOSS AND NOT A FIXED PRICE PER POUND!
  • Fill out a change of address form. Make a list as you notify friends, family and others of your new address.
  • Fill out an IRS change of address form. Click here for a copy or go to http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8822.pdf
  • Get copies of your medical and dental records, if necessary.
  • Get copies of veterinary records, if necessary.
  • If you're moving out of North Carolina, go to http://www.dmv.org/relocation  to find out about auto licensing and insurance in your new locale.
  • If you're moving within North Carolina, go to http://www.dmv.org/nc-north-carolina/change-address.php to find out where and how to change your address on your driver's license.
  • If you’re moving to North Carolina for the first time, go to http://www.dmv.org/nc-north-carolina/new-to-north-carolina.php to find out what you’ll need to do in order to obtain a new driver’s license.
  • Notify your kids' schools and have their records transferred to their new schools.
  • Return any cable equipment.
  • Make hotel and airline reservations if you need them.

1 to 2 weeks before your move

  • Return any borrowed items.
  • Collect all the items you may have loaned out.
  • Make arrangements to disconnect gas, electric and other utilities.
  • Make arrangements to connect utilities at your new place.
  • Arrange to have major appliances prepped for the move.

2 days before your move

  • Dispose of all flammables.
  • Pack your suitcase for the car or plane.
  • Arrange for removal of "installed items" you're bringing with you, like a TV antenna or shelves.
  • Pack a box with paper products, toiletries and other essentials that you'll need the first day in your new home. (Make sure to mark this box "Do Not Move").

1 day prior to your move

  • Take down draperies and rods, if agreed to in you contract.
  • Empty, defrost and clean your refrigerator. Make sure it has at least 24 hours to air dry.
  • Clean and air your stove.
  • Pack your personal belongings (but leave out your alarm clock!)

   Moving Day

  • Collect all keys to locking items. Put them on one key-ring so you can get to them easily.
  • Make sure you're at home when the movers arrive, so you can sign an inventory.
  • Walk around with the crew chief while he does the inventory.
  • Make sure everything is packed to your liking for the move.
  • Keep your signed bill of lading and inventory in an easily accessible place.
  • Make sure the driver has the correct delivery address and phone number. Ask if there are any contract specifications as to your being reimbursed a portion of the moving costs if the movers are late delivering your items.
  • Confirm the expected delivery time with the driver.
  • Before you leave, do a final walk through of every room.
  • Check all closets and cabinets.
